General Letter from Connie Deckert:
Hello to my sister Zontians in Areas 1, 2 and part of 3. I am
your Canadian representative on the Legislative Awareness &
Advocacy Committee for District 4. Throughout this biennium I
will endeavor to bring you information about our legislative process
from a municipal to a federal level as well as discussing how
advocacy can be used at various levels to help us fulfill our
mandate of improving the status of women and children world-wide.
Here is some food for thought@ from a very distinguished Canadian
Therese F. Casgrain. In her 1966 book AA Woman in a Man's World@
she writes Ain a democracy, all the citizens are governed by the
same laws but these are generally drawn up and enacted by men.
If society is to be improved, a greater number of competent women
must make their presence felt in all spheres of life, politics
included.
In Funk & Wagnalls the definition of an advocate is someone
who speaks out - an intercessor - who may be in favor of, in defense
of or making a recommendation - one who pleads the case of another.
In reality all of us practice this every day when we speak up
for what we need as individuals. By learning more about our legislative
process we then can be more effective agents for change.
If there are any specific topics or questions anyone wants addressed
please let me know.
