During the month of October three Ontario Zonta clubs held events in which the funds raised went to the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund better known as LEAF. This organization serves as a guardian of women’s and children’s rights in Canada. It was formed in 1985 when women’s equality rights became law. LEAF will try and gain intervener status in any Canadian court case where women’s or children’s rights appear to be endangered. For more information about LEAF go to www.leaf.ca.
Kitchener held their 5th Annual Person’s Day Breakfast with June MacDonald, Chair of the Women’s Committee of Fair Vote Canada as their speaker. Fair Vote Canada is all about changing the way we vote using proportional representation rather than the first past the post method we now have. For more information go to www.fairvote.ca and also check out www.equalvoice.ca an organization that is working to get more women involved in politics.
Brampton-Caledon had their first Annual Person’s Day Breakfast with one of LEAF’s chief lawyers as their speaker and Owen Sound did an evening event with entertainer Sandra Shamus.
All three of these events are a wonderful example of Zonta using advocacy to “improve the status of women”.
