District 4 has targeted Breast Cancer as the focal point for
our fund-raising efforts.
Golf Tournaments - Eleven Zonta clubs in Canada
host 9 "women's only" golf tournaments in early summer
to raise funds for breast cancer. The initative began in Kitchener-Waterloo
in 1992 when a charter member of that club, Betty Thompson, a
local television celebrity, contracted breast cancer. She went
very public with her disease, wanting to heighten awareness and
much needed funding. Her club responded, and the first Betty Thompson
Golf Classic began. Soon other Zonta Clubs took up the challenge.
Since that time, over $1,250,000 US has ben raised for the fight
against breast cancer. Moneys are contributed locally by each
club for research, supportive care, equipment, education and other
services. For further information, please contact Governor Sandy Travers at zonta@2marketontheweb.com.
