During her career, Jane M. Klausman was a successful professional secretary, parliamentarian and entrepreneur.

The Jane M. Klausman Scholarships work to support women from around the world who demonstrate outstanding potential in business-related fields.

Starting in 2005, Zonta International will give six awards of $5000 annually. Each District selects one candidate who receives $500 US. Clubs who sponsor candidates decide on their own awards.

Notes

  1. Applicants must apply to their local Zonta Club. Club winners proceed to the District Level where one applicant is chosen to be the District winner and our candidate for one of the International scholarships.
  2. Each Zonta Club may nominate one applicant. Nevertheless, more than one applicant from a university or college may participate as long as each is sponsored by a different Zonta Club.
  3. The best applicants are those enrolled in challenging, reputable programs achieving at a high level and demonstrating commitment to their community outside the scope of their academic program. They will be in their third or fourth year of undergraduate business study.
  4. Applicants must demonstrate intent to complete a program in business and show outstanding achievement in business related subjects as recorded on the official university/college/institute transcript.

Winner of the 2008 Jane M. Klausman Award
Jody Grewal

Jody is in her second year of Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Waterloo with a long term plan to achieve her CA designation. Her professor advised that, upon entering university, Jody was interviewed for a Fellowship for the School of Accounting and Finance.  Fellowships are offered to the top 10% of each incoming class and she was easily identified as a member of this cohort.  He sees her in the top 1% of her class as she has eagerly been involved in the requirements for Fellowship.

Jody plans to obtain her CA designation as she believes no organization can be successful without good accounting.   Her experience in the Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management program along with working in a public accounting firm are teaching her  to analyze financial statements and determine how best to create value for the business.  During her work terms and summer work, she has acted as a junior auditor with the public accounting firm and with them worked at a variety of organizations.  She believes this has helped her to learn what will distinguish a successful company from a weak one.

Jody has volunteered at several non-for-profit organizations and recognizes that while management staff from these organizations has strong visions and a passion to pursue the cause of the organization they often suffer from lack of access to necessary capital.  In light of this, her professional goals center on strengthening the non-for profit sector and will offer strategic operational and financial services.

Recognition and a commitment to volunteerism seem to be a habit for Jody and most recently she qualified for the 2008 Dean’s Honours List in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.   In September, 2007 she received the President’s Athletic Academic Honour Roll for attaining excellent academic standing during the terms when she was competing on the interuniversity field hockey team.  Other awards continue back to high school when Jody received the YWPA from the Zonta Club of Ottawa.   We are proud to have Jody as our Jane M Klausman Women in Business winner!
